Red Lions’ deceptive striker Kumbukani Mwambene became the first player in the 2014 TNM Super League campaign to net four times in a game; instantly becoming leading scorer with nine goals in 10 matches.

Mwambene scored in the Lions’ 5-2 humiliation of defending champions Silver Strikers in Zomba on Sunday with Matthews Simbeye getting also on the score sheet for the hosts.

The Bankers, who beat Chikwawa United 2-0 the previous day, are 12th on the 15-member standing with eight points having registered their goals in Zomba through Green Harawa and Sam Gunda. The Lions are placed sixth on 16 points.

The goals galore of the weekend have seen previous leading scorer Calisto Kalinda of Mafco pushed down to third on seven goals, just like Kelvin Hanganda and Gastin Simkonda who scored a goal each on Sunday for Kamuzu Barracks (KB) and Moyale Barracks respectively.

Simkonda was joined on the score sheet by two-goal hero Deus Nkutu in 3-2 beating of KB at Dedza Stadium where Vincent Mphepo also hit the back of the net alongside Hanganda.

Nkutu has eight goals from 11 games and piles the pressure on Mwambene. All strikers have set their eyes on getting past the 18-goal mark which has never been surpassed since 2005.

Moyale top the standings on 23 points from 11 games, two points ahead of second-placed Big Bullets who were frustrated to a 1-1 draw by Azam Tigers at Kamuzu Stadium.
